Papa Fritz

My grandfather, Francis (Fritz) Armstrong passed away last week. He was 87 years old. Our family held a memorial service for Papa Fritz. There was a Navy honor guard, the Patriot Guard motorcycle riders, and a Scottish bagpiper there for the service.

My dad wrote this obituary about Papa Fritz. I will always remember you Papa Fritz!

ARMSTRONG Francis David “Fritz” Armstrong, resident of the Lake Forest neighborhood of Daphne, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, January 4th, 2012, in Fairhope. Fritz, 87 years old, was born September 4th, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio. Fritz postponed his studies at Amherst College to serve as a Navy officer during WWII as an aviator in the Helldiver dive bomber. His training ended one month before the war did, as Fritz prepared for deployment to the Pacific. Fritz was the last known living Helldiver pilot who flew during the war. In March, the Commemorative Air Force flew the last flying Helldiver aircraft to Fairhope to reunite Fritz with the war plane, thrilling all. After the war, Fritz married Juanita and continued his education, earning a chemical engineering degree from the University of Colorado. Fritz and Juanita were soon blessed with three daughters. Fritz worked and retired as a chemical engineer for the paper industry (International Paper, Pensacola; Champion, Monroeville, AL). Later in life, Fritz extended his family as loving husband to wife Mary (Floyd) Thompson, also of Lake Forest. Fritz became a stepfather to 8 adult children and grandfather “Papa Fritz” to 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Community service was important to Fritz, and he volunteered at Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church, Eastern Shore Literacy Council, and council member of the Lake Forest Board. Fritz loved to play golf with friends and family, and was a model of dignity and humility on the green. His refinement extended to the arts, where Fritz loved classical music and opera. Acutely interested in genealogy, Fritz traced roots to Scotland and Northern Ireland, where he later visited. “The Irish Armstrongs” became great friends of Fritz, welcomed their American cousin with warmth, and visited Fritz twice in the States. Perhaps as a result of his Scotch-Irish roots, Fritz enjoyed fine scotch and good seafood -particularly gumbo and oysters. Fritz is preceded in death by two brothers, Mark and Warner. He is survived by his wife, Mary Thompson; a sister, Patricia Armstrong Asbury, and three daughters, Kristi Hogan, Karen Armstrong, and Kathy Sarkis. Fritz is also survived by stepchildren, Christine Martin, Scott Floyd, Mark Floyd, John Floyd, Jim Floyd, Ben Floyd, Paul Floyd, and Matt Floyd. Also surviving Fritz are many sons and daughters-in-law, and extended family, including – as Papa Fritz- his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends and family are welcome to attend a memorial service and reception, held at Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 14th, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Eastern Shore Literacy Council, Fairhope, AL.

Chinese New Year!

We had a Chinese New Year celebration in my neighborhood. This year 2012 is the year of the Dragon. Here are some facts I found on a website about Chinese New Year:

The first day of the 2012 Chinese New Year is on January 23, 2012 in China’s time zone. This day is a new moon day, and is the first day of the first Chinese lunar month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar system. The exact new moon time is at 15:40 on 23-Jan-12 in China’s time zone.

The Year 2012 is the 4709th Chinese year. The Chinese believe that the first king of China was the Yellow King (he was not the first emperor of China). The Yellow King became king in 2697 B.C., therefore China will enter the 4709th year on January 23, 2012. Also, the Chinese Year uses the cycle of 60 Stem-Branch counting systems and the Black Water Dragon is the 28th Stem-Branch in the cycle. Since (60 *78) + 29 = 4709, therefore 2012 is the Water Dragon year, which is the 4709th Chinese Year.

Some web sites say the year 2012 is the 4710th Chinese year. If you cannot find the explanation as to why, here is a possible answer for you. The Yellow King’s inauguration was held in the spring of 2697 B.C. But the day that was used as the first day of the year was the winter solstice, which was around December 23rd, 2698 B.C. Today’s January 1st meant nothing to the Yellow King. If we count that extra eight days in 2698 B.C., then year 2012 is the 4710th Chinese year.

2012 is the year of Dragon. Some people say 2012 is a Black Dragon or Water Dragon year. This is because the Stem-Branch Calendar is connected to the Five Element theory. Chinese calendars used theStem-Branch system to count the days, months and years. There are 10 Stems and 12 Branches in this system. Stems are named by the Yin-Yang and Five Elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth). The Stem sequence order is Chinese Horoscopes Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water and Yin Water. Branches use animal names.

The Branch sequence order is 12 Chinese Zodiac Sign Rat, Cow, Tiger, Dragon, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Chicken, Dog and Pig. Stem and Branch are used together to form a cycle of 60 counting systems which begin with WoodenRatMale WoodMouseWooden Rat and end with Water Pig WaterPigWater Pig. You can see the entire sequence from the Chinese New Year’s page. From 1924 to 1983 is a complete cycle. Year 2012 is Male Water Dragon   Female Waterthe 29th of the Stem-Branch in the system. Because Water is connected to Black in the Five-Element system, Year 2012 is also called the Black Dragon year.

Snow skiing and global warming

I learned today that it seems like we are having a warmer than usual winter, along with the rest of the USA. My dad has been all over and says that no snow has yet come to places with usually lots of snow. Like northern New York – no snow.

We thought about going skiing, my first time, but it has been such a warm winter that we decided not to.

Here are some photos we found on the internet about a ski resort in Peru that now has very little snow. 40 years from start to finish in these photographs!

I’d like to go snow skiing next year. Maybe it will be colder then!

iXL and goals

iXL is a website I use to practice math problems. It is divided into grades, from pre-K to 8th grade and maybe more. I like doing the easy stuff like pre-K or K, but am working on the 2nd grade problems. I have 50% of the problems completed so far (over 5,000 problems total since starting about this time last year).

It can be a chore to do my math problems on iXL. It is extra work and not always easy. But I like doing them with my Dad or Mom, and I always feel like I’m proud of myself for working at it.

It is like the UBBT work I do, keep moving along, do some every day and soon you have really done something good!

New Year!

Happy New Year! This year, my goals are to move on to 3rd grade and also earn by black belt! Looking forward to this year, the year of the Dragon!
